PRESENTATION OF THE WORKSHOP

The National Theses Reproduction Workshop was created in Lille in 1971. The 14th October 1985 convention between the national Department of Higher Education and Lille 3 University, of which the Workshop is a shared division, has defined its missions explicitly:

- The reproduction on microfiches of theses in literature, social, legal and political sciences and their institutional distribution to public organizations of a scientific, cultural and professional nature. The 2001 decree extends this mission to the electronic distribution of theses defended in local universities.
- The reproduction and the commercial distribution of printed theses (with the author’s permission) offered by the “Theses a la carte” division since 1996 or on publisher’s demand.
- The reissuing of older publications belonging to the public sphere.

SERVICES

The Workshop provides a range of services on demand of institutions or private individuals.

THESES BY-PRODUCTS

Theses a la carte
Theses are digitalized and reproduced in their entirety, without revisions, in print format (16x24cm), recto-verso, in as many copies as wanted. This naturally implies that the authors have given their authorization by signing a distribution contract. Theses are then listed according to discipline in the “Theses a la carte” catalogue and sold on demand of any private individual (teacher, scholar, student, etc.) or diverse organizations (bookshop, library, archive, institute, etc.), in France and abroad.
Theses are promoted by mailing to any public which is likely to be interested in the publications, by sending thematic catalogues to specialized bookshops and to research centres and by taking part in various exhibitions, including the Book Fair, in Paris.

Theses in microfiche format
If the author is not opposed to it, the Workshop can carry out the commercial distribution of theses in microfiche format. One microfiche contains about 392 pages; a specific machine, with a lens which magnifies characters 48 times, is required to read it. From the microfiche, the Workshop can reproduce, on certain conditions and for institutional service providers only, a printed version of the thesis in its original presentation and format.

Print run on authors’ demand
On the author’s demand, the Workshop can reproduce his or her thesis (15 copies at least). Works are then presented in a print format (16x24cm), recto-verso. They have neither an ISSN, nor an ISBN and shall be regarded as photocopied reproductions for private use. Therefore, they cannot enter the usual commercial networks (be sold in bookshops, private print…)

OTHER PRODUCTS

Reproduction of theses on publishers’ demand
As soon as a traditional private or public publishing authority declares itself ready to finance the operation, the Workshop can reproduce a revised thesis, old or recent. The publishing authority shall choose the title(s), carry out the revisions, set the print run, specify the copyright and deal with the question of royalties.

Digitalization of older works
The Workshop can reissue older works belonging to the public sphere. It can also digitalize and print works which are too fragile to be put at the public’s disposal in their original form. These reproductions can either be made on a digital medium or be printed for print runs below 600 copies.
